A beautiful website only works if it loads fast and feels stable. Google measures this experience with Core Web Vitals, three metrics that also feed into its page experience signals.
The three metrics
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): how quickly the main content appears. Aim for 2.5 seconds or less.
- Interaction to Next Paint (INP): how fast the page responds to taps and clicks. Aim for 200 milliseconds or less. INP replaced First Input Delay in March 2024.
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): how much the layout jumps while loading. Aim for 0.1 or less.
Design fixes that help
Compress images and serve modern formats like WebP. Set width and height on images so content doesn’t shift. Limit heavy scripts, sliders and third-party widgets, and use caching. These choices belong in the design phase, not after launch. Test your pages regularly with PageSpeed Insights, since new content and plugins can slowly erode performance.
Google’s own guide at web.dev explains each metric in depth. At Schlege Labs, every custom web design is built with these targets in mind from the first wireframe.
